Stumped when it comes to recalls? We have the answers.
It seems as if auto recalls are part of almost every motorists’ life. From safety standards to equipment being out of whack, there have been plenty of recalls over the recent years. While you may never experience a recall, it’s good to know what it is and how to handle it!
Luckily, we’re here to handle all of your vehicle recall queries!
What is it?
A recall occurs when the manufacturer or the NHTSA determines that a vehicle has a safety-related flaw or that does not comply with the federal safety standard. When this happens, the automaker alerts the owners to the problem and is typically offered a repair free of charge.
Will I be notified of a recall?
Typically, auto manufacturers send letters to customers affected by the recall. If you don’t receive a recall letter, you can search through the current safety recalls on the NHTSA’s website here as it is updated when the letters go out.
If I get a safety recall, should I stop driving my car?
If your car is recalled, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in immediate danger. On the other hand, it doesn’t mean you’re safe either. It’s best not to wait around too long before getting your car into the appropriate garage.
Will I be charged for the repair?
If your car is on the NHTSA’s car recall list, all recall-related fixes should be done free of charge. Please note that this doesn’t mean that your car will be replaced, tuned up, and shined, too! You’ll need to take your car to an authorized dealer since they contract directly with the manufacturer. Just in case, it’s best to take the recall letter with you.
Will the problem be fixed?
The NHTSA monitors each safety recall to ensure that the manufacturers provide owners with safe, free, and effective remedies. If you believe that the problem still exists, contact the NHTSA.
