March is National Nutrition Month, which is the perfect time to find little ways to add a more balanced diet to your life. National Nutrition Month was created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and helps to focus on the importance of making informed food choices and developing good eating and physical activity habits. Keep these simple tips in mind to enjoy National Nutrition Month.

  • Create a plan – making healthy food choices everyday can be difficult, especially around dinnertime if you do not get home until the sun goes down. Create a weekly menu and go shopping before the workweek starts to ensure that you have everything you need to stay on track.
  • Stock up on healthy options – if your pantry and fridge is full of healthy choices, you should have no problem making a good choice every time you reach for something to eat. Cut up fruits and vegetables and keep them at the front of your fridge so that they are the first thing you see.
  • Go heavy in the morning and light later – when starting out your day, make sure to eat a well-balanced breakfast. While it is easier to grab a breakfast bar and head out the door, the more you eat in the morning, the better you will feel all day. Also, the more you eat earlier in the day, the less likely you will be to binge when you get home.
  • Do not deprive yourself – even though a chocolate bar is not necessarily a good choice, leaving a little wiggle room for sweets and treats will help you to stay satisfied.
