Fire Safety Tips for Your Business

Fire prevention tips for every workplace.

As a business owner and an employer, it is your responsibility to ensure that your property has been assessed for the risk of fire and to work hard to prevent fires. Fires only need a matter of minutes to rip through buildings and cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage. To help prevent fires in your place of work, take a look at these tips.

Write a fire policy. This should outline a safety policy on what employees should do in the case of fire. It should include who is the responsible person is and arrangements for the health and safety of workers.

Conduct a fire risk assessment. Complete a fire risk assessment of the area or buildings you occupy and ensure suitable means of detection, fire-fighting equipment, and alarms are installed.

Designate a fire warden. Your workplace should have one or more people in charge of creating and maintaining fire safety procedures. These people should receive training on how to evacuate buildings and use fire-fighting equipment.

Hold regular fire drills. Practice your fire evacuation procedures at least annually to ensure all employees know what to do and where to go. Carry out a fire drill sooner if any major changes are made to evacuation routes.

Promote good housekeeping. Ensure you maintain a safe workplace. Don’t keep flammable materials for longer than necessary. Avoid overloading plug sockets. Store electrical appliances safely. Turn off equipment when not in use.
