Oktoberfest celebrations started in 1810, after Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on October 12th. All of the citizens of Munich were invited to celebrate the marriage in the fields that were in front of the city gates. The end of the first Oktoberfest was marked by the presence of the Royal Family at the horse races. The festivities were known as Oktoberfest after the locals of the community decided to repeat the horse races the next year. The field where the first Oktoberfest was celebrated is now known as Theresienwiese, or Theresa’s fields, to honor the new Princess.
