During the month of June, California residents reduced their water usage by 27%. In the summer residents rely on sprinkler systems to maintain their lawns which can use a great deal of water reserves. Fortunately, residents showed comprehension of the severity of the drought and proved that they were taking action by keeping sprinkler usage down to a minimum.
2015 is the second year that California has experienced drought-like conditions, with Fresno situated in the middle of a drought region. The City continuously evaluates the need for increased conservation measures, and has put the Stage 2 plan into action to reduce overall consumption by 25%, and the State’s consumption by 28%. The City of Fresno Water Conservation Program has been actively promoting activities that lower the demand in water supply as well as recognizing that water availability is dangerously low.
Stage 2 Water Shortage Contingency Plan regulations include:
- Limiting summer (May 1st – November 30th) outdoor irrigation to 2 days a week
Odd numbered addresses should water on Tuesdays and/or Saturdays
Even numbered addresses should water on Wednesdays and/or Sundays
- No watering between 9:00am and 6:00pm
- No watering on Mondays, Thursdays or Fridays during the summer months
Fresno has been a leader in water conservation as the residents are already in compliance with most of the water restrictions. With Stage 2 staying in effect until further notice to replenish the groundwater supply, it is imperative for the communities of Fresno and California to continue their dedication by limiting their water use. This includes washing the car with buckets of water instead of a hose, and reducing sprinkler usage. Proactive water conservation efforts validate our city’s ability to adapt and use existing resources fairly and responsibly.
